Jan. 2nd.....

Today was both very emotional and very exciting...

We visited the Rwandan Genocide Memorial where Kirsten got a history lesson.... an unimaginable devastating event that happened only a mere 23 years ago where neighbour slaughtered neighbour and left scars on this country forever.  BUT Rwanda has also been the ultimate testimony of forgiveness & reconciliation where you now witness kindness & community. What blew us away was when we discovered our sweet taxi driver Celestin had gone through the genocide when he was 9 yrs old. He survived by hiding in the toilet of an outhouse during the day for 45 days and in the bushes at night.  He lost all of his relatives.  And yet is such a kind soft spoken man who loves to boast about his children. Wow... perspective.  We were so blessed to cross paths with him.

In the afternoon we left for Rwamagana. A small city in the eastern province of Rwanda (just over an hr outside the capital city, Kigali). This is where we will spend most of our time. What a beautiful drive. They call Rwanda, "the land of a thousand hills". You are either driving up a mountain or down. The team of people who run the school program were so welcoming. The house we are staying in is lovely with electricity (alleluia!) but no running water ðŸ˜ž. You read right... we use bottled water to brush our teeth & a gerry can filled with water to flush the toilet... #awesome#justlikecamping#first world problems😬

We then spent the afternoon sorting all the school & hygiene supplies into backpacks. The team was so excited which really made us excited. Also sooo thrilled not to be lugging 200lbs around anymore😅
