Today we handed out drawstring backpacks to the younger kindergarten students. Inside their bag they received a toy, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap & wash cloth. You would think that what child would want a toothbrush & soap... these children would.
Don't let their clothes deceive you.... their homes are so small, made of clay & wood door...no electricity or running water... closest water station is usually 2-4Km one way. I find Rwandans very proud when they go in to town or social event like today, where they wear their best.
We asked parents to attend as well bc most are so primitive & uneducated in their thinking that the team asked me to do basic teaching on the importance of hygiene, hand washing & oral care; not only to their children but to them as well. When water is SO precious & soap is such a luxury, it's so hard to reinforce the importance of those things to this population.... not to mention that most would not own a toothbrush. However, they were so receptive & welcoming.... and they loved their gifts as well!
