Today we totally splurged by taking the day off from school and going with kind friends to Akagera game park. We had to wake up at 5am but it was totally worth it. It's important to start your safari trip early as that is when the animals are best to be out & about. By noon is pretty hot & most are hiding in the shade. It was a 5 1/2hr tour in a 4x4 on very rough terrain.

The highlight was the herd of elephants where it is possible to go to the park for a week and not see any all. We got pretty close but we had suddenly reverse to maintain distance because one female elephant spotted us and started flapping her ears and walking toward us.
The park guide said if you don't respect their boundary especially with calves around, they have been known to overturn a vehicle with her tusks! The animals in the water are actually hippos. The frustrated me the most because as soon as their massive bodies were up out of the water they would sink back underneath before I could take a picture.

Fact: Hippos can stay approximately 6 min under water. The only animals we missed out on were the lions but no one has spotted them for 2 weeks. It is believed that they have new cubs and are in a hidden nesting area.
We were then fortunate to spend a luxurious night at the Akagera Game Lodge with HOT water and a pool! Baboons also like the accommodations such that as we were heading out of our room for dinner there two baboons walking past our door being chased by guards....LOL. First cows now baboons.
